Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 19 @ 7:30 pm (Lord’s Supper)

Easter, Sunday, April 20 @ 10 am

Maundy Thursday – is set aside to commemorate the beginning of Jesus’

suffering as he gathers in the upper room with his disciples; washed their

feet; gives them “final” instructions”; reveals his betrayer; institutes the

Lord’s Supper; and then proceeds to the Garden of Gethsemane where he

prays; is betrayed and arrested; and then taken to stand trial before the San-

hedrin (the high court of the jews).

Good Friday – is the day we ponder the intensity of Jesus’ suffering: his trial

before Pontius Pilate; his rejection by those he came to save; the abuse and

mockery of the Roman soldiers; the crucifixion; the pain and agony in three

hours of supernatural darkness and divine desertion. The church is gradually

darkened as the Lamb of God lays down his life for us.

Easter Vigil - on Saturday evening, God’s people gather for the “Vigil of

Easter”, a service to prepare oneself for Easter morning. In times past, the

Vigil was used as a service in which converts were baptized and received the

Lord’s Supper for the first time.

Easter Sunday – the highpoint of the Church Year. The joyful greeting

“Christ is risen!” receives an equally joyful response: “He is risen, indeed!”

Our sins are forgiven. Because Jesus lives, we also will live. Songs of cele-

bration and “Alleluias” fill in the air.
